Our department fosters systemic thinking and critical thinking, training our scholars to see the “big picture.” By understanding the interconnectedness of institutions and questioning the status quo, we address the root causes of policy challenges such as institutional fragmentation and accountability gaps rather than just the symptoms. This is paired with a commitment to innovative thinking, where we champion creative problem-solving and the adoption of modern strategies to bridge the gap between policy goals and community needs.
Central to our mission is an interdisciplinary approach. We recognise that the most pressing issues from urban inequality to climate resilience do not exist in silos. By integrating insights from across the social and physical sciences, we provide a holistic environment where diverse disciplines converge to tackle complex governance issues and develop sustainable governance solutions. We are dedicated to enhancing transparency, strengthening the rule of law, and improving the efficiency of public service delivery.

The idea of establishing a Department of Government and Public Policy was envisaged keeping in view Pakistan’ long struggle with governance issues and lack of a dedicat institution that could be the breeding ground for producing civil servants. This department aims at producing graduates of the highest quality who can play a decisive role in public, private and non-profit institutions, not only within Pakistan but also around the world. The Department of Government and Public Policy made a debut in 2010 with the launching of a Bachelor of Public Administration programme. Coming to grips with the problems that infect Pakistan is indeed a tall order, but it must be noted that NUST has a history of establishing educational institutions par excellence. We are confident that the Department of Government and Public Policy will prove equal to the challenge. The strength of our current faculty and their linkages in the public and private sector, expose our students to an array of ideas, experiences and thoughts from those who have worked in the highest echelons of government, as well as the private sector. We believe that bringing Pakistan’s best and the brightest, former and current, civil servants to interact with our students will not only help them gain an insight into the dynamics of Public Administration but also allow for a creation of a very valuable human resource. In future, the Department intends to launch many other programmes that will be as relevant to the cause of good governance and public policy formulation, its implementation and analysis as BS Public Administration is to the current times.
